・エド・トム・ベル保安官を演じるトミー・リー・ジョーンズ 1980年代アメリカのテキサスとメキシコ国境に近い砂漠ですべてが始まった。狩りをしていたベトナム帰還兵のルウェリン・モスは、偶然、死体の山に囲まれたピックアップ・トラックを発見する。そのトラックの荷台には大量のヘロインと200万ドルという大金が残されていた。モスは自分の人生を大きく変えることを知りながらも、その金を奪ってしまう。この瞬間からモスの命は狙われる。
ルウェリン・モス（ジョシュ・ブローリン）は逃げる男。追う男１はアントン・シガー（ハビエル・バルデム）。追う男２はエド・トム・ベル保安官（トミー・リー・ジョーンズ）。逃亡劇が始まる。三人を待ち受ける運命は…。

映画の仕組みは今日的な西部劇に仕上がっている。だからこそ面白い。映像から西部劇部品を取り出してみよう。まず、金貨でなくドル札入りのトランク奪回をめぐる逃走と追跡。一匹狼の殺し屋が常用するのはショットガンでなくボンベ付きエアーガン。馬でなく自動車とトランスポンダー。保安官はカーボーイハットにピストル。テキサスの荒涼とした砂漠とメキシコの国境。登場人物の心情は非情そのもの…。立場のちがう３人の男たちがそれぞれの自分流を主張する。映画の冒頭で、「いまはすべてにどう対処すればよいのか分からないが、ともかく…」と語っているように、タイトル　'No country for old men.' それ自体が映画の流れの中で具現化していく。
原作は国境３部作でベストセラー作家コーマック･マッカーシーの'No country for old men.' 邦訳「血と暴力の国」(2005)の映画化。世界の不条理に直面する人間の運命を、コーエン兄弟が監督と脚色によりどう創作し、表現しているかに注目すべき映画である。

映画が原作を征して秀逸した作品になるのは脚本の恩恵にある。本映画は脚色賞も獲得している、だから、じっくりと脚本も味わってみたい。
さて、それだけの読みどころ・聴きどころ・観どころは、たとえば、このシーン。

Ed Tom Bell: I was sheriff of this county when I was 25 years old. Hard to believe. My grandfather was a law man, father too. Me and him was sheriffs at the same time, him up Plano and me out here. I think he's pretty proud of that. I know I was. Some of the old time sheriffs never even wore a gun. A lotta folks find that hard to believe. Jim Scarborough'd never carry one, that's the younger Jim. Gaston Borkins wouldn't wear one up in Camanche County. I always liked to hear about the oldtimers. Never missed a chance to do somethin. You can't help but compare yourself gainst the oldtimers. Can't help but wonder how theyd've operated these times. There was this boy I sent to the 'lectric chair at Huntsville here a while back. My arrest and my testimony. He killt a fourteen-year-old girl. Papers said it was a crime of passion but he told me there wasn't any passion to it. Told me that he'd been planning to kill somebody for about as long as he could remember. Said that if they turned him out he'd do it again. Said he knew he was going to hell. Be there in about fifteen minutes. I don't know what to make of that. I surely don't. The crime you see now, it's hard to even take its measure. It's not that I'm afraid of it. I always knew you had to be willing to die to even do this job. But, I don't want to push my chips forward and go out and meet something I don't understand. A man would have to put his soul at hazard. He'd have to say, "O.K., I'll be part of this world."

上記は映画の冒頭ナレーションであるが、これから事件を追うことになるエド・トム・ベル保安官の日頃の心情をよく言い表している。ベル保安官ののモノローグから保安官ベルがどのような人物であるかを予測できよう。
ベルは映画の最終シーンでは妻ロレッタに次のように話している。今朝見た２つの夢の話をする。

Ed Tom Bell: Alright then. Two of 'em. Both had my father in 'em . It's peculiar. I'm older now then he ever was by twenty years. So in a sense he's the younger man. Anyway, first one I don't remember to well but it was about meeting him in town somewhere, he's gonna give me some money. I think I lost it. The second one, it was like we was both back in older times and I was on horseback goin' through the mountains of a night. Goin' through this pass in the mountains. It was cold and there was snow on the ground and he rode past me and kept on goin'. Never said nothin' goin' by. He just rode on past... and he had his blanket wrapped around him and his head down and when he rode past I seen he was carryin' fire in a horn the way people used to do and I could see the horn from the light inside of it. 'Bout the color of the moon. And in the dream I knew that he was goin' on ahead and he was fixin' to make a fire somewhere out there in all that dark and all that cold, and I knew that whenever I got there he would be there. And then I woke up.

・冷徹な追う男アントン・シガーを演じるハビエル・バルデム ◇
渡り者で殺し屋のアントン・シガー。22年ぶりに流れ着いたのはテキサス。ガソリンスタンドの主人と話す会話から、シガー流の不条理が垣間見れる。1958年製のコインを使って表か裏かを選ばせようとするが、次に起こるのはなにか…。

Anton Chigurh: What's the most you ever lost on a coin toss.
Gas Station Proprietor: Sir?
Anton Chigurh: The most. You ever lost. On a coin toss.
Gas Station Proprietor: I don't know. I couldn't say.
[Chigurh flips a quarter from the change on the counter and covers it with his hand]
Anton Chigurh: Call it.
Gas Station Proprietor: Call it?
Anton Chigurh: Yes.
Gas Station Proprietor: For what?
Anton Chigurh: Just call it.
Gas Station Proprietor: Well, we need to know what we're calling it for here.
Anton Chigurh: You need to call it. I can't call it for you. It wouldn't be fair.
Gas Station Proprietor: I didn't put nothin' up.
Anton Chigurh: Yes, you did. You've been putting it up your whole life you just didn't know it. You know what date is on this coin?
Gas Station Proprietor: No.
Anton Chigurh: 1958. It's been traveling twenty-two years to get here. And now it's here. And it's either heads or tails. And you have to say. Call it.
Gas Station Proprietor: Look, I need to know what I stand to win.
Anton Chigurh: Everything.
Gas Station Proprietor: How's that?
Anton Chigurh: You stand to win everything. Call it.
Gas Station Proprietor: Alright. Heads then.
[Chigurh removes his hand, revealing the coin is indeed heads]
Anton Chigurh: Well done.
[the gas station proprietor nervously takes the quarter with the small pile of change he's apparently won while Chigurh starts out]
Anton Chigurh: Don't put it in your pocket, sir. Don't put it in your pocket. It's your lucky quarter.
Gas Station Proprietor: Where do you want me to put it?
Anton Chigurh: Anywhere not in your pocket. Where it'll get mixed in with the others and become just a coin. Which it is.

・シガーに追われ男ルウェリン・モスを演じるジョシュ・ブローリン◇
ドル札の行方を追う依頼をうけたカーソン・ウェルズが、負傷して入院中のルウェリン・モスを見舞って交わす会話で、ウェルズは殺し屋シガーの人物像をユーモアの通じないやつだと言う。モスがシュガーかと聞くと、いやシュガーじゃない、シガーだと言う。会話から、まだ会ったことのないシガーという男は若造でなく真面目で恐ろしいやつというイメージが彷彿してくる。

Llewelyn Moss: What's this guy supposed to be the ultimate badass?
Carson Wells: No I wouldn't describe him as that?
Llewelyn Moss: How would you describe him?
Carson Wells: I guess I would say he doesn't have a sense of humor. His name is Chigurh.
Llewelyn Moss: Sugar?
Carson Wells: Chigurh, Anton Chigurh. Do you know how he found you?
Llewelyn Moss: Yeah I know how he found me.
Carson Wells: Called a transponder.
Llewelyn Moss: Yeah I know what it's called. He won't find me again.
Carson Wells: Not that way.
Llewelyn Moss: Not any way.

●トミー・リー・ジョーンズへ聞いてみると
──あなたが演じた保安官のベルは、昔気質なテキサスの男ですね。

「"悪の顔"はあっと言う間に変わるけれど、"善の顔"は変わらない。ベルが直面しているのは、そういう問題なんだ。彼はドラッグが国境を超えてくることや、自分が稼いだわけでもないお金のために殺し合いをする人々に慣れることができない。ベルはそんな相手を打ち負かせると感じている男なんだよ」

──『NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN』（原題）というタイトルが持つ意味について、どのように考えていますか？

「"カントリー＝テキサス"についてならよく知っているんだ。生まれた場所だし、幸せに暮らす何人かのオールドマンも知っている。私もあと15分ほどしたら、そうなることが予想されるしね（笑）。でもこの映画のなかのカントリーは地理的なものではなく、寓話的、比喩的に使われているものだと思うね」
